Many of us will have dreamed as children of becoming firefighters.

The chance to carry out an heroic rescue, climb a giant ladder, train a hose or simply be at the heart of the action, has a certain attraction at a young age.

It appears that some people are taking advantage of the fire strike to relive their childhood dreams.

Oxfordshire's Chief Fire Officer John Parry reports a growing and worrying trend, with people tackling fires themselves, rather than waiting for the ancient Green Goddesses.

This might appear praiseworthy while the professionals are on strike, but it could lead to serious injury and death if a fire takes hold and the amateur firefighters are trapped.

The advice Mr Parry gives is sound - dial 999, get out and stay out.

Property can be replaced, lives cannot.
