Joey Beauchamp, who confirmed this week he had settled out of court with Oxford United over his "extra year" contract dispute, says he still doesn't know if he will be able to play competitively again.

Joey BeauchampThe recent operation on his broken toe was a success but he remains in some discomfort.

He said: "The operation went well, it was a total success, and the pain I was getting from the dead bone in my foot has gone. But the foot is still slightly painful.

"To be honest, the toe doesn't feel anywhere near 100 per cent. I haven't done anything, physical-wise, since the op and I've got to see what the specialist says, and see whether I can get around it to play again.

"I'd love to get back playing - my brother plays for Abingdon and I wouldn't mind playing for them - but my toe's going to have to be a hell of a lot better than it is at the moment."

Fans voted Beauchamp United's 1990s Player of the Decade. Yet he is amused, he says, that he got this accolade despite never winning the player-of-the-season award.

"I did get Player of the Decade and am proud of that. I was gutted that I never got the player-of-the-year award, even in the season when I got 19 goals. I thought I was a bit unlucky not to get it that year."

It went that season - 1997-8 - to the skipper, Les Robinson.
