An overhaul of public toilets in west Oxfordshire is on the cards.

More than £600,000 could be spent over the next few years to bring them up to a good standard and to introduce new "superloos".

According to the chairman of the district council's environment scrutiny committee, David Harvey, changes are needed.

"As a council we spend quite a lot on promoting tourism to this area. But visitors coming here may not get the best of impressions when they have to visit our public toilets," he said.

The council runs 15 public toilets, in Witney, Carterton, Chipping Norton, Burford, Woodstock, Eynsham, Bampton, Bladon and Charlbury.

Most are old buildings and need refurbishment. Changes have to be made to meet the new standards of the Government's Disability and Discrimination Act.

The council could also move towards charging. It has already provided new toilets at the public car park in Burford, where a 10p charge is in force.

Mr Harvey, who runs an antiques business in Witney's Corn Street, said: "Whilst we applaud the idea of free public toilets for everyone, it may no longer be feasible or desirable.

"Those who vandalise our toilets may not want to pay to do so."
