standards and security So impressed were Government inspectors with an Abingdon primary school that they identified only a couple of areas in which there was need for improvement.
The Ofsted team said Caldecott Primary School was "good with some excellent features".
Teaching was said to be good everywhere, and often very good. Children were judged to be making good progress and not a single lesson was unsatisfactory.
Caldecott was applauded for its carefully planned curriculum and the wide range of school clubs and opportunities outside the school for children. The inspectors also praised the good and polite behaviour of pupils.
The report said the school was a "haven of calmness and security".
The inspectors were pleased to see how children gained confidence, and commended the very high expectations of staff.
Tribute was paid to staff for their team spirit and commitment to pupils.
Inspectors also praised the leadership of the school: "It is extremely well led by an inspirational headteacher who is very well supported by knowledgable governors and a dedicated, hard-working staff."
The only criticism the inspectors had for Caldecott was the need to improve on science and writing at seven, and in science and maths for 11-year-old pupils.
The school's chairman of governors, Kevin Nelson, said: "This is an issue we take seriously and already we have been working hard to improve test results.
"We'll use this encouraging Ofsted report as a springboard for future growth and development."
Headteacher Margaret Gibb said: "This is a wonderful Ofsted report and a tribute to all the staff, pupils and governors.
"I'm so pleased that everyone has got the credit they deserved. This is a school of which we should all be proud."
Major structural changes are on the way for the school.
A £1.3m building programme is planned.
When it is completed next year, the nursery and six new classrooms will be linked with the existing West building.
Mrs Gibb said: "We're looking forward to all children being brought together next year under one roof.
"It's been a dream for years.
"There are exciting times ahead for Caldecott School."
