Worried residents in Farmoor are calling for action to stop flooding on a dangerous bend in the village.

A petition signed by more than 20 people living in Oxford Road, between Swinford toll bridge and the village, calls on the Vale of White Horse District Council to improve water courses.

The petitioners say water overflows on a regular basis on the double bend near Pinkhill House and Pinkhill Lodge.

So far this year the road has flooded in January, February, July and five times in October and November.

Petition organiser Caroline Baird said: "When the road floods not only are drivers at risk but pedestrians are engulfed by heavy spray and risk being hit by an out-of-control car.

"There were 42 serious injury accidents between 1996 and last year.

"The flooding is very serious now that the road has become so busy with the increase in light industry in Eynsham and Standlake. It also provides a short cut between the A40 and A34."

Nearby gardens and the Thames Path are often flooded.

Adding to the problems is a sewer that overflows on a regular basis.

Cumnor ward councillor Derek Rawson said there was clearly a problem in the area and he supported the petitioners.

The issue will go to next month's meeting of the district council's executive.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: "We will be investigating the complaints and, working in conjunction with other agencies, will try to solve the problem."
