A row has broken out over the naming of an old people's home in Wallingford.

The site of the Blue Mountains home, in Wantage Road, will be developed for housing, and the home will move to St George's Road.

The Oxfordshire Care Partnership, which is building the new facility, wants to call it Westgate House because it is near the former west gate of ancient Wallingford.

But the council wants it called St George's House, involving the name of the road and the fact that St George's Hospital used to be there.

Member Theresa Jordan is angry that it was not consulted about the name.

She said: "St George's Hospital is remembered with warmth by people in Wallingford and the name should be perpetuated."

The partnership says the hospital was the isolation hospital and would give a bad impression, while the maternity unit at Wallingford community hospital bears the St George's name.

Town councillor Adrian Payne said it was an isolation hospital, but not called St George's Hospital until it became a maternity hospital.

Member Denis Strange said he could not see what the fuss was about.

He said: "When we went to the ceremony where the first turf was turned, the plaque saying it was Westgate House was unveiled there and then.

"That was in July and only now are we making a fuss. It's ridiculous."

The council agreed to make another attempt to persuade the partnership -- which consists of the county council, Bedford Pilgrims Housing Association and the Orders of St John Trust -- to change the name.
