Powergen Intermediate Cup: Centre Martin Nutt scored a hat-trick of tries as Oxford Harlequins powered into the last 32 with a convincing 50-0 victory over Barton Hill in a one-sided fourth-round tie at Horspath Road on Saturday (Nov 30).
Rob Dow leads a Harlequins maul
There was some confusion before the kick-off, as the Bristol side had left their kit behind. So Quins loaned them a set of shirts and a messenger was despatched to the local sports shop to buy a set of shorts and socks to solve the problem.
The shirts may have looked simliar, but there was a big difference between the sides in the quality of play.
Barton Hill started strongly enough. In the first ten minutes they missed two kickable penalties and a try-scoring chance before a mini brawl saw things settle down.
Quins weathered the storm and took the lead, when a super move sent Nutt on a scything run to the line. Fly half Chris Penney converted.
Then a great move involving forwards and backs ended with Nutt beating the cover to score his second try. Penney added the conversion and a penalty to make it 17-0 at half-time.
After the break, the Quins pack, with lock Rob Dow and No 8 Paul Nye outstanding, began to get on top and the side added five more tries, four of which Penney converted.
Scrum half Anthony Cope shot through like a rocket to score under the posts, then a sweeping move and a switch of direction sent right wing Guy Dobson over.
Nutt completed his hat-trick when he intercepted on Quins' ten-metre line and raced down the field to score.
Quins kept the ball moving and were rewarded as full back Dave Boreham capped a first-class display by scoring two late tries.
