The Corn Exchange was packed for a meeting on the future of the town's Marriotts Close site -- and no one spoke in favour of a superstore.
About 200 people attended the meeting, which was held 24 hours after Asda announced it had drawn up plans to build a superstore on the site, the former home of Witney Town FC but derelict for the past 10 years.
West Oxfordshire District Council will make the final decision.
Town and district councillor Steve Holborough said: "I know it will not return to being a football pitch, but it seems to me most people want it to be some sort of green space."
Various ideas for the site were put forward, ranging from a park, a tea room and a youth centre.
