First hand experience of the plight of some of Uganda's poorest children inspired a church leader in Oxford to start an appeal to help them.
The Rev John Wilkinson, minister of the Collinwood Road United Reformed Church in Headington, is helping young people from Oxford to raise around £21,000 to help set up homes for the youngsters.
"Many of the Ugandan children are orphans due to war, or Aids, and there are not enough adults to look after them," said Mr Wilkinson.
"It's just heartbreaking when you see the number of children affected, and it's amazing how they all try to help each other."
Mr Wilkinson met the youngsters during a Scout leader training event in Uganda in 2000. He said money raised from the appeal would be used to build houses. Some would be rented out, with the rent providing an income for orphans who would live in the others.
United Reformed Churches across Oxford have raised £6,000 for the scheme but need a further £15,000. To help, call Mr Wilkinson on 01865 761648.
