Builder Ian 'Digger' Beesley has been charged with criminal damage after digging up an Oxford road hump in November.

He will appear at Oxford Magistrates' Court on December 13.

And in a double blow for the 41-year-old, his JCB digger was also given a parking ticket -- after he drove it to the city's St Aldate's police station on December 11.

He had parked on double yellow lines in Floyd Row and had caused traffic jams while he was at the police station.

Mr Beesley, of Ferry Hinksey Road, was unrepentant before meeting the police.

He said: "I'm expecting them to charge me. But the road humps are down to the council to do something about.

"Since the hump went it's been a lot quieter and it could be a lot quieter still when they surface the road.

"You know exactly what will happen if they put the hump down again -- I will rip it up again."

Mr Beesley dug up the speed hump in Ferry Hinksey Road on November 25, after claiming that he could not sleep because of the noise lorries were causing as they went over it.

They were installed as part of a £90,000 traffic-calming scheme after lengthy consultation with the public. They were intended to make traffic safer for pupils at West Oxford Primary School.

Mr Beesley, who was accompanied by his wife Lillian, spent 90 minutes with police.

He then left with his solicitor, Nicholas Cotter, of Darbys.

Mr Cotter said: "My client has been charged with criminal damage to the road surface of Ferry Hinksey Road.

"This is a somewhat unusual and unique case which raises many contentious issues."

He added that the case raised many issues, including human rights laws.

Mr Beesley immediately drove off in his digger and did not comment on his parking ticket.

Council officers have not decided what to do with the speed hump and have said that they will carry out more consultation before a decision is made.

Mr Beesley's actions sparked massive interest from across the country and the Oxford Mail has been inundated with messages of support for him -- and a few containing criticism of his actions.
