A man who had to be rushed from The Horton Hospital in Banbury to Cheltenham because of a lack of intensive care beds could not be saved, an inquest heard.
Robert Pearce, 24, of Sinclair Avenue, Banbury, had taken a cocktail of three drugs, although there was no indication any of them was at a lethal level, the Tewkesbury inquest heard on Thursday.
The dead man's father, Martin Pearce, said his son was found collapsed and unconscious behind his bedroom door on June 6.
He said: "He was taken to The Horton Hospital, Banbury, then to Cheltenham General after it was discovered that neither our local hospital, nor the John Radcliffe in Oxford had any room in intensive care."
Forensic scientist Mark Tyler said Mr Pearce had taken a sedative, a sleeping drug and paracetamol.
He was admitted to Cheltenham General Hospital on June 6, but died three days later from bronchial pneumonia as a result of a mixture of drugs.
Cotswold coroner Lester Maddrell recorded an open verdict.
