A retired police sergeant who patrolled the streets of Wantage, has died at the age of 84.
Francis Herbert Hitchcox, known as Ron, died in his sleep two days after celebrating his birthday.
He was born in Banbury in 1918.
In 1938 he joined Berkshire Police, serving at Abingdon, Faringdon and Wantage.
During the Second World War, he served with the Royal Artillery in North Africa, Italy and Germany.
After the war he resumed his police career in Rowstock and Chaddleworth, before returning to Wantage.
After retiring in 1968, he became a council rent collector.
He later renewed his connections with the police and worked, in a civilian capacity, at Thames Valley Police headquarters in Kidlington.
His funeral was held at St Augustine's Church in East Hendred. He leaves two sons Peter and Adrian.
His wife Margaret, a former teacher in Wantage, died in 1995.
