British Waterways, which maintains the Oxford Canal, is warning people to take extra care if they visit the canal this winter.

Waterways manager Christine Styles said people should be aware that canal and lock edges could be slippery during icy weather.

She said iced-over water always looked tempting, and urged parents to tell children not to step on to the ice.

She added: "At this time of the year there is so much to enjoy along the waterway, but it is vital that people know the dangers.

They should not step onto frozen canals or let children or dogs play on or near the edge of the canal.

By observing a few safety measures, people will be able to enjoy the peace and tranquility of canals without tragedy striking."
