Nigek Wagstaffe, the King's Lynn promoter, and his Oxford Cheetahs counterpart Steve Purchase, could do a swap deal which would ensure speedway at Cowley next season.

Wagstaffe has been widely tipped to take over at Oxford - and he has admitted he can't see himself being in charge at Saddlebow Road next year.

If the swap in tracks went ahead, it would mean Purchase racing in the Premier League next season at King's Lynn, and Wagstaffe bringing his side to race in the Elite League at Cowley, but any deal has to be rubber-stamped by a meeting of speedway's general council.

Wagstaffe said: "I have met Steve only once, although we exchange telephone calls, and hopefully the outcome will be what both parties want.

"I really can't see me being at King's Lynn next year. I'm only interested in Elite League racing, but at the end of the day, any decision has to be ratified from the top.

"It would be nice if it all turns out OK, and I will be looking at the latest developments later today."

Purchase said: "The details are complicated, but talks are still going on and I wouldn't like to put any deadlines on the proceedings."

If a deal goes ahead, it could mean the return to Cowley of one of the most successful Oxford riders, Jason Crump.

The Australian world No 2, a King's Lynn asset, is currently on loan at Belle Vue, but if Wagstaffe eventually wins the day, he could bring Crump with him.

Other top riders on their books include Nicki Pedersen, who won the Danish Grand Prix last year, and Pole Sebastian Ulamek, who would provide the backbone of the team.

The other attraction for Wagstaffe are the excellent corporate facilities available at Sandy Lane, which are sadly lacking at the Norfolk track.
