A woman who had suffered from a drink problem for many years was found dead in her bed by a friend, an inquest in Oxford heard.

The body of Mary Drew, 48, of Cherry Tree Road, Chinnor, was discovered by Geoffrey Clarke at just after 7.30am on February 11.

Mr Clarke, who told the inquest he had looked in on Mrs Drew every morning and evening, said he had called 999 before organising for a neighbour to look after her son.

The inquest heard Mrs Drew, who was divorced, had suffered from a depressive illness and substantial alcohol problem for several years.

Consultant pathologist Dr Sanjiv Manek said a post-mortem revealed a significant amount of alcohol in her blood, and the cause of death was acute liver failure due to alcohol abuse.

Coroner Nicholas Gardiner returned a verdict of death by natural causes, aggravated by neglect caused by her lifestyle.
