Radley Ladies' junior Lucy Boggis made a memorable England Schools' debut by grabbing a brilliant silver medal at the Gordon Woodlands Schools Pentathlon in Glasgow.

Lucy BoggisBoggis, from Lew, near Bampton, was competing for England in the competition for under 16s and steadily moved up the rankings to finish second, behind Scotland's Carly Sharp, with 3,164 points, achieving three personal bests.

In the 60m hurdles, she recorded a time of 9.26secs, while she putted the shot 10.09m and cleared 1.16m in the high jump.

Boggis's achievement was all the more outstanding as she competed with athletes two or three years her senior.

At 13, she was the youngest athlete on the day, and has now set her sights on the southern and national pentathlon championships to be held early in the new year.

"I really enjoyed myself," she said. "It was a great experience, as I'd never taken part in an international event before, so it was completely new to me.

"I really didn't think I would do well. I have been going too well in training, so I just looked at this event as an experience, but everything just clicked into place."

After the first event, the long jump, Boggis was in seventh, but it was after the second - the hurdles - that she started thinking of a medal.

"I thought I would stay around seventh," she explained. "But after the hurdles - my main event - I moved up to fourth, and the shot put me into the medal positions.

"Then I beat the girl who was in second place in the 800m to get the silver, so I was really pleased with myself."

Boggis's father, Peter, said: "She had been feeling pretty grim with flu, so I am very happy for her. Her build-up wasn't good, and she's obviously raised her own performance and pulled out all the stops."

The Southern Pentathlon Championships takes place in Bedford on January 12, with the national championships in Cardiff on March 23.

Meanwhile, Boggis competes in individual events at Bedford on January 3 and at Birmingham on January 25/26.
