A woman who stabbed her partner with a knife during an argument in their Oxford home was told by a judge that such an attack could have resulted in her being sent to prison.

But instead, heavily-pregnant Amanda Atkins, 22, of Three Corners Road, Greater Leys, who admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm on Darren Smith, was given a 12-month community rehabilitation order.

Julie Hopkins, prosecuting, told Oxford Crown Court that the incident happened during a row at the couple's home on July 18.

The pair were in the kitchen when Atkins assaulted him with a 4-5 inch serrated-bladed knife, causing cuts to his arm, one of which needed stitches.

Ms Hopkins said that when interviewed by police, Atkins admitted what had happened, and showed them the knife.

The court heard that Mr Smith had since made a statement withdrawing his support for the prosecution.

In defence, Peter Coombe said the couple were living together again and that Atkins was due to give birth in March.

He said their relationship had improved.

Judge Mary-Jane Mowatt said in the interests of both Atkin's daughter and unborn child, she was satisfied a 12-month community rehabilitation order was the most appropriate sentence. But she added: "In your case it seems that this was a manifestation of difficulties in a relationship and what is more important is that Darren Smith has been forgiving and understanding about what happened."
