Hundreds of villagers are campaigning against the early release from prison of teenage brothers responsible for a fatal car crash.

Nearly 700 people from Long Hanborough have signed a petition organised by the family of David Smith, 46, of Church Road, who was killed in the crash on the A40 near Cassington last December.

Learner driver Paul Folan, 17, and Martin Folan, 19, had both fallen asleep.

Their car went on to the wrong side of the road and hit Mr Smith's vehicle.

The brothers were both jailed for three years and nine months at Oxford Crown Court in April.

Paul Folan pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, having no insurance and driving without a proper licence.

Martin Folan admitted aiding and abetting causing death by dangerous driving and permitting the no-insurance and no-driving licence offences.

But in November the brothers, both of Camberwell, London, had their sentences reduced to two years at the Criminal Court of Appeal.

Mr Smith's relatives were outraged and vowed to fight the decision.

His widow Anne and daughter Nikki, 28, left petitions in village shops and pubs. Relatives took to Witney's streets to highlight the campaign.

Shop supervisor Mrs Smith, 42, said she was overwhelmed by the level of support.

She added: "A lot of people know about the accident, but I never imagined so many would be interested in backing us. It's been brilliant.

"This won't bring David back, but it's makes us feel better to think we might be able to help others in the future."
