A nightclub and a skate park could be built on the edge of Wallingford.

The suggestions feature in Wallingford Town Council's Town Plan, which includes ideas for the development of a five acre site alongside Hithercroft Road, near the Wallingford Sports Park.

Mayor Nigel Moor said: "The site presents an opportunity for mixed-use development of housing, starter industrial units and community facilities.

"These could include a skateboard park and a nightclub."

The town has been left without a nightclub since the closure of Rivers club in nearby Benson, about ten years ago.

Town councillor Theresa Jordan said: "Lots of people, especially the young, miss the nightclub.

"Not everyone wants to go home to bed after the pubs shut and that is one reason why we have problems in Wallingford town centre.

"The youngsters want to stay out longer but there is nothing for them to do at that time, and nowhere for them to go. A nightclub here would provide a proper outlet for their energies and move problems out of the town centre.

"If an organisation wanted to build a nightclub in the Wallingford area the town council would consider it -- but only if it went to Hithercroft." Ms Jordan also called for the setting up of a skatepark to replace the former 'half-pipe' skateboard ramp in the town's Bullcroft park.

The ramp, which had been built by the town council, was demolished in August after being repeatedly vandalised.

Ms Jordan said: "The skateboard area in the Bullcroft was a disaster because it was in the wrong place. We want a skateboard area for the youngsters and if necessary it could go at Hithercroft."

Councillors also supported calls for more businesses on the estate, creating more jobs.
