A man was killed after falling from a bridge over the busy A40 ring road near Oxford into the path of traffic.
Police at the scene of the accident
The death closed the northern bypass for several hours on Saturday morning, between the Banbury Road roundabout and the Green Road roundabout in Headington, while police investigated the incident.
The 38-year-old man, who has not been named, was hit by a purple Volvo estate car after falling from the Marston flyover bridge.
Police are not treating the death as suspicious.
The Volvo was being driven by Philip Jerome, 52, of Witney, who was travelling to work.
Mr Jerome was travelling towards the Green Road roundabout, when his car hit the man.
Police were called at 6.30am, and the A40 between both roundabouts was closed for three hours.
PC Andy Mott said: "We will never know whether this man deliberately jumped into the path of the Volvo, or if the car just happened to be there.
"Mr Jerome saw a shape in the carriageway and, before he could take evasive action, he struck the object, which he found to be the man who jumped off the bridge.
"This is a tragic thing to happen, especially at this time of the year.
"We are appealing for anyone who saw this man walking in the vicinity of Marston on Saturday morning to contact us.
"We have one person who has provided us with information, but we would like to hear from anyone else who witnessed the incident."
Anyone with information should call police on 01235 556920.
