Banbury's new mayor paid tribute to the town's past at her inauguration ceremony -- but said people must look to the future to create wealth and jobs for young people.
Rosemarie Higham said: "We have an attractive and thriving town in an unrivalled position with the M40 and other transport links.
"The town's history and loyalties are understandably important to residents. The past has taught me to love Banbury, but we must now look ahead. We must support Banbury and its businesses, especially the small traders who will provide a personal service."
She added: "No one can take away this town's past glories but we must look to the future and move with the times.
"We must create wealth and jobs for our young people."
Council leader John Colegrave said: "Rosemarie is no stranger to hard graft. Banbury is lucky to have her."
Her deputy mayor will be Surinder Dhesi.
