A twelve-year-old chess champion is celebrating after being picked to represent Great Britain.

Daniel Rey

Daniel Rey, of Charlton Village Road, Wantage, who finished in joint first place in the Oxfordshire Junior Chess Championship, will represent Britain on a five-day trip to Poland later this month.

Daniel, a pupil at Magdalen College School in Oxford, has been playing since he was three-and-a-half, when his family lived in Venezuela, and he became fascinated by people playing chess outdoors in parks around the country.

He regularly competes in tournaments, represents his school at the game and is a member of Wantage Chess Club.

His mother Rosemary said: "He loves playing. He studies it a lot but he does seem to have the right kind of analytical mind."

George Spalding, organiser of Wantage Chess Club, said: "We're very proud of his success, and wish him well in Poland."
