Silver Surfers' Day --Friday, May 16 -- aims to mark the contribution people aged more than 50 are making to the Internet.

The event was organised by City & Guilds, the National Institute for Adult and Continuing Education, Hairnet and Age Concern.

Mr Wales said: "Our research shows that of the 34 per cent of people aged 55 and over who are computer users, 66 per cent feel it has had a positive impact on their lives.

"But only 17 per cent of those aged 65 and over have tried it. The reasons include cost, difficulties with vision and hand movements, or a perception that the Internet is not relevant to them."

In Oxfordshire, Age Concern has opened IT centres in Blackbird Leys, Faringdon, Chalgrove and Shotover. More are planned.

Beryl Mills, 66, of Welford Gardens, Abingdon, said: "I've learned about word processing, games and designing and printing birthday cards.

"I use the e-mail because it's cheaper than the phone."
