A man who was described as "the collective memory" of the village he lived in all his life has died at the age of 84.

George Panting was born in Ramsden, near Witney, and was involved in all aspects of village life.

He was also a war veteran of the D-Day landings, a volunteer adviser for the Citizens Advice Bureau and a well-known cricketer.

He was born in 1918 and at the age of 17 began work for the then Witney electricity department.

Mr Panting became a founder member of the Ramsden branch of the Royal British Legion, going on to become its president.

He lived in a cottage in High Street and immersed himself in village organisations, serving on the Memorial Hall committee for more than 50 years.

He is survived by his wife Edith and daughter Wendy.

The funeral is tomorrow at 3pm, at Ramsden parish church.
