A mugger whose attack on an 83-year-old woman left her with injuries from which she died has not been identified despite the offer of a £10,000 reward.

Gladys Gardner, 83, of Villeboys, Abingdon, had just left Radley post office when her handbag was snatched and she was forced to the ground. She suffered a broken hip in the attack, on February 13, and died seven weeks later in hospital.

An anonymous donor offered a £5,000 reward for information leading to the prosecution of the offender and doubled the amount last week.

But officers said they were no closer to identifying the thief. They added that the mugger could have come to Radley from outside the area.

Dc Kevin McGuire, of the major crime unit, said: "We have had calls about this incident and we hope the bigger reward on offer might produce leads. But unfortunately we have still not received any significant information."

The empty handbag was found near the entrance to Culham Lock. Medical tests have been carried out to determine exactly how Mrs Gardner died, but have so far proved incon- clusive.

The coroner released Mrs Gardner's body last week to allow her funeral to take place. Chairman of Radley Parish Council Dennis Standen said: "My belief is that the person responsible for attacking Mrs Gardner is not a local person because I am sure villagers would have come forward."
