Oxford Mail chief football writer, Jon Murray, has been banned from the club by Oxford United chairman Firoz Kassam.

Jon MurrayIt follows Murray's criticism of Kassam's failure to invest money made from successful cup runs into the football club last season, his reports of discontent behind the scenes and interviews with players who were critical of the United chairman's actions.

Murray, who has covered the U's for the past 16 years, received a letter from Kassam this week, informing him of the chairman's decision.

Kassam's action comes hard on the heels of Sportsmail revelations that United's players faced heavy penalties if they talked to the press.

Towards the end of last season, unhappy United players spoke to Murray of their concern over a lack of progress on new contracts.

One of them was midfielder Dave Savage, who claimed on Tuesday that chairman Kassam had blamed him for the club's failure to reach the Division 3 play-offs and had told him "to find another club".
