Firefighters had to force their way into a blazing Didcot packaging firm to tackle a fire believed to have been started by arsonists.

Smoke was billowing from Selectomatic Packaging Ltd in Station Road, when two crews from Didcot and one from Wallingford arrived at 7.09pm on Sunday, May 25.

Station officer Mick Pilcher said: "We had to force our way in by breaking down the doors.

"Once inside we found several fires, some involving stacked goods on pallets.

"There were cardboard boxes full off tinned food which was exploding because of the intensity of the heat."

It took firefighters two hours to put out the blaze.

Insp Melvyn Kendall, of Thames Valley Police, said the fire started in a number of different areas which suggested arsonists were responsible.

The building's owner was not available to comment.
