A woman lied to police to cover up for her boyfriend after he crashed a car into a lamp-post in Bicester while drunk, a court heard.

Carol Mobey, 24, of Willow Drive, Bicester, denies one charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Oxford Crown Court heard on May 28 she told police she was driving the BMW when it swerved on to a pavement in Willow Drive knocking over a lamp-post.

But witnesses said they saw her boyfriend in the driver's seat.

Barnaby Evans, prosecuting, said at least three Willow Drive residents saw Mobey and a girl in the back seat of the car as her boyfriend and another man tried to push it back on to the road.

A few minutes later, they saw her and the girl climb out and throw beer bottles into nearby gardens.

The court heard when police arrived shortly afterwards, both men were arrested. Tests revealed they were at least two times over the legal alcohol limit.

Mr Evans said Mobey twice told police she had been driving, but they dismissed her claims thinking she was drunk.

Three weeks later, she was arrested after again telling police that she was to blame for the accident.

Jonathon Coode, defending, said Mobey had told the truth and that witnesses were confused by what they had seen.

The case continues.
