The service gun caused something of a stir at Roland Garros on Tuesday when it recorded the speed of one of Tim Henman's serves at 583mph, which is approaching the speed of sound.

It was, of course, faulty but Henman still came back with a bang after a nine-month break from Grand Slam action to post an impressive straight-sets victory over Vladimir Voltchkov of Belarus in the first round of the French Open.

The 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 victory was Henman's most impressive triumph since the shoulder surgery which sidelined him for four months.

The British No 1, from Weston-on-the-Green, believes the extra fitness training during that time could provide a vital edge at Wimbledon.

"Working hard on the strength in my legs was a priority. It is very relevant on clay," said Henman. "If it works on this surface, when you come to the others it stands you in good stead. It all bodes better for the grass.

"Whenever I've finished this tournament there's nothing better to have in the back of my mind than grass courts, and being at home."
