Age Concern Oxfordshire is pushing ahead with a campaign to represent all older people by organising more meetings for black and ethnic minority pensioners.
The campaign began in March with forums in Banbury and Oxford specifically for minority groups. Now two follow-up meetings are planned -- on June 5 in Oxford, and on June 13 in Banbury.
The forums are being organised because black and ethnic minority elderly people have previously been under-represented in Age Concern's consultation exercises.
The March meetings revealed that minority groups have general concerns, about low income, for example, as well as specific cultural needs. Problems include language difficulties including the lack of access to interpreters, the lack of specialist workers with knowledge of specific communities, poor availability of English classes and lack of funding for social and cultural activities.
Age Concern Oxfordshire chief executive Mary Daniel said: "We are committed to support the continuing involvement of black and ethnic minority elders and ensuring their views are heard and acted upon."
Anyone wishing to attend one of the forums should call Mary Evans Young on 01295 263273. Transport and interpreters can be provided.
