A former mayor of Abingdon and Vale of White Horse District councillor George 'Jock' Aird has died at the age of 75.
Mr Aird was a member of the district council from 1983 until 1994 when he lost his seat and the Tories surrendered control to the Liberal Democrats.
He served on Abingdon Town Council for 16 years from 1979 and was mayor between 1986-87. His wife Joan was mayoress.
A former airman, Mr Aird was born in Scotland and served all over the world with the RAF for nearly 30 years.
His last years of service were spent at RAF Abingdon, now Dalton Barracks. He died after a long illness.
District and town councillor Mike Badcock, a former mayor and Caldecott ward councillor with Mr Aird, paid tribute to Mr Aird's enthusiasm for his adopted town.
"Jock Aird was a very fair man who knew how to enjoy himself, but who also took great pleasure in helping promote Abingdon," he said.
"He was keen on fostering twinning links and was a great supporter of the town's morris dancers."
The funeral takes place at Oxford crematorium on June 7, at 11.15am.
It is a private family occasion but the family said friends were welcome to attend. Donations in lieu of flowers are being made to the British Heart Foundation.
