War veterans are livid after vandals damaged a new memorial column outside their Oxford clubhouse.

The damaged war memorial

The Royal British Legion's Littlemore branch had the special stone plinth, created by stonemason John Dorrill in honour of the area's war dead.

The memorial was to provide a focal point for future remembrance services as veterans of the Second World War have become too frail for the long walks to church and parades.

Last month, a local veteran died and legion members gathered for a service in his honour. Wreaths of poppies were laid alongside fresh flowers at the foot of the memorial.

But the wreaths and flowers were trampled over and vandals tried to wrench the memorial column from its base, leaving it leaning over and unstable.

It is believed a gang of about 10 youths, who are regularly asked to leave the clubhouse grounds, were to blame.

Littlemore Royal British Legion branch secretary Megan Cross said: "These kids ought to be taught to show more respect for the elderly and the war dead."

Work is now under way to mend the memorial.
