An exhibition tracing the rich history of learning in Wantage has gone on display at the town's Vale and Downland Museum until Sunday, July 20. The exhibition looks at the past, present and future of education in Wantage, starting with the first school, set up following an Act of Parliament in 1597.
Pupil Clare Bristow, 14, in the present-day uniform, with Reuben Green, also 14, in a traditional outfit.
It later closed, but in 1849 the school re-opened to help commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of King Alfred's birth.
Since then, King Alfred School school has gone from strength to strength, gaining Sports College status in 1999.
