West Oxfordshire district councillor Gareth Epps has resigned from a committee in a row over what time of day they meet.

Mr Epps, who works for a public relations company in Reading, said day time meetings were difficult for full-time workers.

While most of the district council's meetings start at 2pm, some are held in the evenings.

Last week, members of the finance and management scrutiny committee voted for all council meetings to take place during the day.

Mr Epps, who represents Freeland and Hanborough for the Liberal Democrats, said: "I know some other councillors find it hard to get to meetings during the day, as do members of the public. Other district councils in Oxfordshire meet in the evenings or have a mixture."

In South Oxfordshire, all the meetings start at 6pm, in Cherwell the meetings are mainly in the evening with a few during the day, while the Vale of White Horse meets both during the day and in the evenings.

The leader of West Oxfordshire's cabinet, Barry Norton, said: "Committees set their own times for meeting.

"Fewer people turn up to evening meetings, but we have not ruled out experimenting with them again."
