One of Oxford's oldest businesses is leaving George Street to make way for Nuffield College's plans for a restaurant.

Oliver and Son, the printers and stationers, is moving to West Way, Botley, after trading in George Street for more than a century.

The family business lost out to Nuffield College when the lease came up for renewal.

The college acquired a head lease from Oxford City Council of properties stretching from 71-79 George Street.

Managing director Graham Oliver said: "I am sad. George Street is not the place it was 20 years ago. It used to be a shopping street. Now it is all bars and restaurants."

Oliver and Son's customers include many Oxford colleges and Christ Church Cathedral.

As well as printing letter heads, information sheets and cards, it also produces many village and church magazines around the county.

Mr Oliver, who operates the business with his wife and son, said the company had been established in 1874 and in the same premises for 72 years.

Nuffield has submitted a planning application to the city council for the redevelopment of the whole of the 71-79 George Street block.

It is applying for a restaurant on the ground floor with study rooms and flats above.

A college spokesman said: "Nuffield College is pleased that Oliver have found suitable premises within the ring road and, as past and future customers, wish them every success in their new location."
