Yobs targeting one of the last NHS dentists in the county have brought him to the brink of abandoning the community he has served for 10 years.

David Young's surgery in Fane Drive, Berinsfield, one of only 12 NHS dentists left in Oxfordshire, was attacked for the second successive weekend on June 22.

Windows were smashed and the damage meant he had to cancel patients' appointments. Dr Young said he was at the end of his tether and thinking of moving out.

He was also angry over what he saw as a lack of police action.

Dr Young said: "The alternative is making this surgery into Fort Knox with metal window grilles. This could cost me up to £15,000, money I simply haven't got. I can't even claim on the insurance.

"There is a £500 excess just for being here in Berinsfield, so I have to fund repairs out of my own pocket.

"I'll give it another two weeks, then seriously consider pulling out.

"This surgery is just too easy a target."

He said when he reported vandalism to police all they did was give him a crime record number.

Dr Young said: "I've never had a visit from them, not even a phone call, absolutely nothing. I'm pretty disgusted."

The prospect of losing their dentist has left Berinsfield residents worried.

Catherine MacLean said: "He's a wonderful dentist and one of the last NHS practices in the county.

"It would be a tragedy if we lost him because of the actions of these hooligans."

Ken Burns said: "Police and public apathy lead to situations like this, then the whole community loses out."

John Carter added: "It would be great to see these people caught and punished but no-one believes that will ever happen."

No-one was available for comment from Thames Valley Police at either Wallingford station, which covers Berinsfield, or at Didcot area headquarters.
