Watlington were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw with Banbury West End in Ladies Division 1 of the 2-Pair League when one of their players had to retire from the crucial deciding set to collect her children!
The match was evenly poised at 1-1 after the first round of matches, but when Ann Jollye and Sharon Irish beat Diane Adams and Nicky Scott 6-2, 6-2, Watlington were the favourites.
On the other court, Ruth Ballantyne and Caroline Gould were still in the first set against Karen Taylor and Anne Omer, but the Watlington duo took a narrow lead when they edged a tense first-set tie-break.
However, after the Banbury pairing fought back to take the second set 7-5, Ballantyne was forced to concede the deciding set in order to pick up her children, leaving the match in stalemate.
The two sides agreed to start the match an hour early in order to finish on time, but after three and a half hours of play, Ballantyne was left with no other option.
The result means that Watlington have now won two and drawn two of their four matches, but have won more sets in each encounter.
There was another draw in the match between Faringdon and Benson, with a three-set decider again determining the outcome.
After the sides were once again level at 1-1 after the first round, Charlotte Bailey and Sherry Foster gave Benson a 2-1 advantage.
But Sussana Hunt and Bec Ross earned Faringdon a share of the spoils with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Mandy Claridge and Judy Coyne. RESULTS
