Pupils from 15 schools in Oxfordshire were in pole position for an action packed race-day at Silverstone.

The race, held on June 27, was the culmination of the national engineering competition, Formula Schools, in which pupils design and engineer their own radio controlled race cars.

The Oxfordshire enthusiasts were among more than 1,000 pupils, from 100 schools throughout England, who battled it out in a day of action that replicated a genuine grand prix.

Teams competed for prizes in categories including: best engineering, fastest lap, best driving and best team work. Wheatley Park School and Lord Williams's in Thame made it to the final 18.

The competition was supported by the Learning and Skills Council for Oxfordshire.

The national competition encouraged young people aged 13-15 to develop key engineering skills

The Matthew Arnold School at Cumnor was sponsored by Renault F1.

The school's technology teacher Nick Humphries said: "It's great seeing the pupils working as a team. The amount of time and effort each student contributes is tremendous."
