Angler Roger Young is hoping to land a healthy catch of trade after setting up his own tackle shop.

Champion angler William Raison officially opened Mr Young's Maggot's End tackle shop in Barns Road, Cowley, Oxford.

Born in Barton, Mr Young, now aged 50, has worked for fishing tackle shops since leaving school at the age of 14. After being introduced to the sport by his father, he took a Saturday job at Fred Taylor's tackle shop in Cowley when he was still at school.

He has worked in just about every fishing shop in the city.

After 36 years in the business he was made redundant last November when Oxford Angling Centre in Cowley Road closed. After receiving advice from Oxfordshire Business Link, Mr Young and his wife Angie have now set up on their own.

Mr Young said: "It was the best thing I could do.

"Cowley might seem an odd place to open a tackle shop, but it's near one of the biggest estates in Oxford, Blackbird Leys.

"Lots of people here love fishing. It's also not far from Cowley car works and I have plenty of parking spaces and am near the bypass, so it's ideal.

"I've fished everywhere in Oxford with my father and enjoyed it so much as a boy I didn't want to do anything else. I still don't."
