Motorists claim south Abingdon has been forgotten about by the town's transport strategists.

They say commuters are forced to take lengthy detours or begin their journey early in a bid to avoid the queues that build up at the junction of Drayton Road and Ock Street.

Steve Annells, the chairman of Tithe Barn and Ladygrove residents' association, said: "The Abingdon Integrated Transport Strategy scheme seems to have overlooked one of the biggest troublespots along Drayton Road."

Motorists on Drayton Road also face congestion at the junctions with Caldecott Road and Preston Road.

But Roz Smith, a Vale of White Horse district councillor and member of the Abingdon Integrated Transport Strategy group, said plans to improve congestion were being pushed up the agenda.

She added: "The whole junction is to be re-planned to improve traffic flows in all directions.

"Design work is already in hand and we hope to see work start next year."

Commuters have written to the county and district councils asking for speedier action to ease their daily nightmare of travelling between home and work.

Mr Annells said: "South Abingdon is cut off by the sheer weight of traffic, despite having few shops and facilities.

"Bus services are delayed and one service could well be removed by the end of August.

"There's no sign of relief for motorists in the town.

"With more homes going up, conditions are set to deteriorate."

Mrs Smith added that plans to widen part of Marcham Road would also alleviate traffic bottlenecks caused by congestion.
