A developer is trying to push out Wantage's last-remaining discount store because it does not fit in with plans for a new retail park, it has been claimed.

Clovers manager John Hudson said he was told his store, which has been in Grove Street for 30 years, did not give the image developers wanted for the Limborough Road park.

He said Wantage-based Bushbuy Ltd, the project consultants, had offered him money to leave the shop, which he has leased for three years.

When he said he did not want to go and that he planned to sign a new ten-year contract in October, he was told his rent would increase by three-and-a-half times.

Mr Hudson said he feared for the future of independent retailers and community spirit once the development, which has attracted interest from many national chains, opened.

He said: "I was told my shop wasn't the kind they want at the gateway to the park.

"They said they would help me relocate. I find it insulting."

Bushbuy Ltd said it was discussing a possible sale with the owner of Clovers, but Mr Hudson could not be forced to leave against his will.

Managing director Bill Atkinson said: "He has a contract. It's up to him whether he stays or goes."

Reg Waite, chairman of Wantage Chamber of Commerce, said it was essential that independent retailers were supported and urged Bushbuy Ltd to do more to communicate with existing shops.

He said: "There is room for all, but there must be teamwork, rather than the developer calling the shots."

Mr Atkinson said he had kept the Chamber of Commerce and Wantage Town Council fully informed of the visions and progress of the £20m park, which will include seven retail units and six warehouses.
