Pupils past and present joined together to celebrate the long history of an Oxford school which is about to close.

Headington Quarry School in Quarry School Place has been forced to close because of dwindling numbers.

On July 4, about 40 former pupils got the chance to look round the school buildings one last time.

Many of them attended the school, which opened in 1864, as long ago as the 1930s and said their parents had also studied there.

In the afternoon, the school hosted a fete for the children, which included the crowning of the school's summer queen and country dancing.

The event was attended by about 400 people.

Headteacher Kate Rule confirmed that the school would be taken over by the Headington Day Nursery in September.

She said that despite the nostalgia of the occasion, many past pupils were relieved to know that the school would still be used by children and families.

She said: "It wasn't a sad occasion. We were celebrating what we are and what we have been.

"It's really just a change of age group for the building. This site is a beautiful and very secure place."

Meanwhile, an Oxford first school held a ceremony on July 4 to mark its transformation to primary status.

SS Mary and John School in Hertford Street, Cowley, will be a primary school from September as part of the school restructuring in the city.

The school will take children aged from five to 11, instead of five to nine, by taking pupils from Isis Middle School. The roll will expand to 420 pupils
