Volunteers have completed a detailed survey of life in a south Oxfordshire village to find out what the people really want.

Led by scientist Dr Andrew Johnson, they delivered questionnaires to all residents of Crowmarsh Gifford, near Wallingford, asking about issues such as employment, recreation and transport.

After two years spent analysing replies from 654 adults and 134 young people -- a 60 per cent response rate -- they have published Crowmarsh Parish Appraisal -- What You Told Us!

The results show that most people want a youth club, and many want more traffic-calming measures.

The appraisal identifies an east-west divide in the village, caused by the busy A4074. It also reveals that an overwhelming majority wants Wilder's Yard industrial area to remain in the heart of the village.

Parish councillor Dr Johnson, a scientist at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, who has lived in Crowmarsh for six years, tackled the exercise in local democracy because he felt councillors rarely asked people's views.
