Oxford Silver Machine promoter Nigel Wagstaff has explained why negotiations with American superstar Greg Hancock are taking so long.

He wants Hancock on board not just for next season, but to be part of the future Oxford speedway scene.

Wagstaff said: "I have been in regular contact with Greg and I'm still very hopeful of negotiating a package where I can tie him into the whole scene at Cowley.

"My main asset, Jason Crump, will be sold this year and it's important I have a No 1 team rider in more of a business relationship.

"Ask any of the riders what a boost Greg is in the pits. He is one of the best and if we can get him on board, it will help stabilise the business. We need a commitment for both of us."

Wagstaff added: "I have plenty of irons in the fire and if I don't manage to secure the services of Greg, there will be plenty of others to choose from."

One rider who recently became available is Billy Hamill. He was released by Coventry in favour of Andreas Jonsson at the weekend.

So far, Wagstaff has only tied up the signatures of Niels Kristian Iversen and Sebastian Ulamek, but he has made his intentions known that he would like Travis McGowan and Andy Smith on board.

The Oxford boss is also spearheading moves for a British manufacturer to supply new air fences for all Elite League tracks this year.

He put a proposal to the British Speedway Promoters Association recently and it was taken on board.

He said: "The fact that the fences are made in England will make it much easier for replacements and repairs. The costs will be met by the clubs and riders.

"The riders are well aware that the air fences prevent injuries, and to that extent they are planning to ride without being paid in a special meeting against Poole in aid of the fence fund."

The Silver Machine could also get extra mileage out of the fence deal by way of team sponsorship.
