Trevor Cain, 26, and Andrew Surch, 24, both of North Hinksey, are taking part in the Plymouth to Dakar Challenge to raise money for the Sobell House Hospice in Oxford.
The aim of the event is to drive 3,000 miles from the South coast of Great Britain to the West coast of Africa in a vehicle costing less than £100.
The Oxford pair have already driven through France and Spain in their Lada Riva estate and are now making their way across the desert.
Meanwhile, a man taking part in the prestigious Paris to Dakar rally in aid of Helen House hospice in east Oxford is also making good progress.
Chris Emerson, 47, from Buckinghamshire, is hoping to raise £100,000 by completing the 11,090km race across two continents on motorbike.
