A leading member of the Girl Guide movement in Oxfordshire, Gwendoline 'Betty' Godfrey, from Appleton, near Cumnor, has died after a short illness. She was 79.
Mrs Godfrey first became involved in the Girl Guide movement in the 1960s.
Born in Charles Street, Oxford, Mrs Godfrey was one of six children. She was educated at Iffley School and became a bookbinder at Mowbrays in Oxford. Her family moved to Rose Hill when she was 13.
She married Aubrey Godfrey in 1948 and they lived in Cumnor until 1975, when they moved to Appleton.
Her husband died in June 1994. Mrs Godfrey is survived by her two children Joy and Stephen and four grandchildren. Her funeral was held at Oxford Crematorium.
