Folk musician Charles Cordingley, familiar for his concertina playing in clubs and pubs, has died after a short illness, aged 76.

Mr Cordingley played for a folk band called Mixed 'Erbs and later for a band known as Sage and Onion. The bands appeared at Bicester Folk Club, which met at pubs in the town.

Born in York, Mr Cordingley spent much of his youth in Donnington, Shropshire, where his father was posted in the 1939-45 war.

He met and married his wife Helen in Donnington in 1951 when he was in the civil service working at an Army ordnance depot.

They were posted to Berlin for three years and came to Bicester in 1964 when Mr Cordingley's job was transferred to what was then Bicester Ordnance Depot.

In 1985 the couple moved from Bicester to Fritwell.

Mr Cordingley is survived by his wife and three children, Derek, Gary and Anne.

He died on December 20 and the funeral was held at Banbury Crematorium on December 31.
