The late Henry 'Harry' Warnes was very much a Wallingford man -- he was born in the town, went to school there and lived there all his life.
Mr Warnes, 79, of St George's Green, died on December 19 and his funeral was held at Oxford Crematorium on Christmas Eve. He left Wallingford Boys' School at the age of 14 to join the Post Office as a telegram boy.
Apart from his wartime service in the Royal Navy he was with the post office for 46 years -- being promoted to postman, then inspector.
He retired 20 years ago.
In the navy he was part of the D-Day landings on Omaha Beach, Normandy.
He married his wife Kathleen Gunning in 1948 in Sheffield. They met while she served with the Land Army in the Wallingford area.
Mr Warnes was an active member of the Wallingford Comrades Club and a founder member of Wallingford Wine Circle.
He and Mrs Warnes travelled widely after he retired.
He is survived by his widow, daughter Maureen and son Michael.
