The last community activities for children in two neighbouring villages could fold, the outgoing leader of a Brownies group has warned.
Maggie Mellersh
Since Maggie Mellersh stepped down as Brown Owl at Christmas, the 12 girls in the East and West Hanney group, near Wantage, have had to separate and join other packs in Grove because no replacement has been found.
Mrs Mellersh wants to reunite them, but said the search for someone to take on the role was proving extremely difficult.
She said: "I handed in my notice last summer and we have advertised in local school and parish magazines, but no-one has come forward so it's getting desperate.
"It would be lovely if someone would take it over as the girls are very enthusiastic and we have a cupboard full of equipment and activities. It's sad that they have been split apart."
Mrs Mellersh, from Grove, who was Brown Owl for five years, said the closure of the Brownies group could mean that the Hanney Girl Guide unit would also fold.
She said: "The girls obviously move up to the Guides from Brownies. Without these groups there would not be any children's organisations left in the village, as the Cub and Scout groups closed a number of years ago."
Mrs Mellersh said informal training was given and a good sense of humour was necessary.
She said: "My time has come to an end as I feel I've had enough. There is quite a lot of planning involved, but it is extremely enjoyable and very rewarding."
The Brownies group should meet every Wednesday during term time, from 5.30pm to 7pm in East Hanney.
