A charity shop manager has called for more security in a quiet shopping precinct after her store was targeted by vandals for the second time in six months.

A large window was smashed on Friday night or the early hours of Saturday at the Katharine House hospice shop, in Wesley Lane, Bicester.

Last June thieves broke through the shop's front door and went on a wrecking spree letting off fire extinguishers and destroying stock.

Manager Jo Spinks said: "It cost £213.43 to repair the window and that has to come out of our budget -- so basically £200 of stock had to be sold to pay for a broken window.

"It is just a shame these people have nothing better to do with their time but to pick on charity shops. We are staffed by volunteers and it is very distressing for them to come to work and find this."

Mrs Spinks called for better lighting and CCTV cameras to be installed in the lane.

Sheena Cox, who owns Bicester Health Food Shop, backed Mrs Spinks' call for better security.

She said: "Me and my sister are here in the shop in the evening and this lane is very dark by 5.30pm. It is quite off-putting for customers as well -- when you look down the lane it looks very intimid- ating."

Insp Ray Howard, of Bicester Police, said: "The fact that this charity premises have again been attacked by vandals reiterates how important it is that local residents remain vigilant to such appalling antisocial behaviour, and report anything suspicious to police."

Cherwell District Council's community safety officer Geoff Bell said the existing CCTV cameras had a partial view of the shop, but installing a new one was dependent on funding and whether Wesley Lane was designated a problem area.

He added: "It costs £15,000 to put in a camera, but there can be alternatives."
